Design Statement
Marcus; or the Secret of Being Sweet is a coming-of-age story of discovery and identity, both past present, set in the Louisiana Bayou neighborhood of San Pere in late August 2005, just days before Hurricane Katrina hits. He deals with questions of intersectionality, maleness, queerness, homophobia and legacy. It makes powerful references to dreams, to masculinity, to Southern Black culture, to stereotypes and bias, to storms, to rain, honesty and deceit within families, and the idea of the truth releasing us from bondage.

By creating an environment that captures both the realistic elements of the New Orleans through the architecture of the neighborhood and the nature of the bayou (trees, water, moonlight), we will create a visual canvas of textures and surfaces on which we can align the metaphor of the impending storm with that of Marcus’ impending discovery of who is inside. And to show the intersectionality of his identity and history.
